Configuring Boundary and Discovery for the server & Client Platform - SCCM 2007
Configuring Boundary and Discovery for the server & Client Platform
So far what we have done is we have installed Primary Site Server in Europe.com and Installed Secondary Site Server in Site2.Europe.com.
For more information on installation of primary site server and secondary site server click on the below link.
Introduction to System Central Configuration Manager 2007
Installation of System Center Configuration Manager 2007
Installation of Secondary Site Server – SCCM 2007
In this section we will create boundaries for each site and then we will do a discovery for the server and client computers.
Note – so far I haven’t installed any client computers. I will install it later once I configure the discovery pool.
By default we will have address for primary site server in the secondary site server. Inorder to see that:
Log on to primary site server
Open the SCCM console
Expand Site database
Expand Site Management
Expand Primary Site Server
Expand Secondary Site Server
Click on Addresses
Figure 1:
But when we go to primary site server Addresses – we don’t see it (I am not sure on this) however for my topology I have created a Addresses for Secondary site server manually, inorder to do it
Log on to primary site server
Open the SCCM console
Expand Site database
Expand Site Management
Expand Primary Site Server
Right Click on Addresses and select New : Standard Sender Address
Figure 2:
Put the destination site code name and destination server name and click next
Figure 3:
It will show to schedule: let it be the default one and click next
Figure 4:
Rate Limits: Default one and click on Finish
Figure 5:
We have created a address space from Primary Site Server to Secondary Site Server - Viceversa.
Next thing we need to create a Boundaries for doing discovery of the client:
How to Create Boundaries:
Create a Boundary for Default-First-Site-Name:
Log on to primary site server
Open the SCCM console
Expand Site database
Expand Site Management
Expand Primary Site Server
Right click on Boundary and click on New
Name: Site1, Site Code: Primary Site Server & Type Active Directory Site and Select Default-First-Site-Name
Figure 6:
Create a Boundary for Site2:
Log on to primary site server
Open the SCCM console
Expand Site database
Expand Site Management
Expand Primary Site Server
Expand Secondary Site Server
Right click on Boundary and click on New
Name: Site2, Site Code: Secondary Site Server & Type Active Directory Site and Select Site2
Figure 7:
Then "Allow client Push Installation for both the site server":
Expand Site database
Expand Site Management
Expand Primary Site Server
Expand Site Setting
Click on Client Installation Methods
Double Click Client Push Installation and select “enable client push installation”
Figure 8:
Follow the above steps for secondary site server as well.
Configuration of Discovery for Client\ServerPlalforms:
Configure Discovery Methods:
Expand Site database
Expand Site Management
Expand Primary Site Server
Expand Site Setting
Discovery Methods
Double Click Active Directory System Discovery
You will see 3 tabs – General, Polling Schedule and Active Directory attribute
In General Tab – Select “ Enable Active Directory System Discovery" and under the Active Directory Container – Select “Europe.com” by clicking on the start icon and selecting the option : local domain
Figure9:
> Then click on Polling Schedule Tab and select “run Discovery as soon as possible”
Note: this option is selected for initial test later let it be run as per the scheduled time
Figure 10:
Follow the above discovery method for Secondary Site Server as well. However the local domain which we will select is “Site2.Europe.com”.
Figure 10-1:
Figure 10-2:
One more thing: under Client push installation: Go to Account Tab and add the Administrator account information who installed the SCCM, in my case Europe Administrator under Secondary Site Server
Figure 11:
Once we do discovery, one log will be generated under: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\Logs called as adsysdis.log
Expand Site Database
Expand Computer Management
Expand Collections
Right click on “All Desktops and Servers and then click on Update Collection Membership and select update subcollection membership as well.
Figure 12:
In the above figure see the server name, domain name and site code.
Note: I haven’t installed Winxp and Vista.
Now I will bring Windows XP for Europe.com and Vista for Site2.Europe.com and then we will do a discovery.
Figure 13:
Hope this article is being very informative to you all thanks for your time in this matter. In my next articles you will see how to installation of client software & performing hardware\software inventory and promoting a primary site server to central site server.
