Troubleshooting Delayed Mailflow from relay server to E2K7 Hub Transport

Recently I've had a problem with my E2K7 environment which is still in the migration phase. We are Migrating from a separate E2K3 Organization ( InterOrg Migration) Using Quest Tool.

We have so far migrated about 10% users to the new E2K7, emails for these migrated users are still routed form the old E2K3 environment ( we have a SMTP connector created which forwards emails from these relay servers to our Hub transport servers for these 10% Users)

We noticed that these 10% users will get all the emails delayed, the SMTP queue on the E2K3 relay servers were in retry state. These emails will be delivered eventually but will be extremely late.

We did have some interesting findings & I enjoyed may day troubleshooting this, thought you ...<< MORE >>

Messaging Record Management

                                                                            Messaging Record Management

Messaging Record Management (MRM) helps us to keep the messages that are need to comply with company policy, government regulation or legal needs and to remove those messages which are not required by the organization as per their policies. This is achieved by the mode of one folder which is being created under users mailbox called as "Managed Folder " which work as per the content setting applied on it. Messages under Messaging Record Management are processed as per the policy applied on it when it reaches to retention period either it can be moved to the deleted items folders, or to a managed custom folder, permanently deleted, marked as past retention limit or delete and allow recovery.

Advantages of Windows Server 2008 Core Server

In my previous Blog http://exchangeserverinfo.com/2008/05/21/windows-server-2008-core-server.aspx
I mentioned about not so attractive features of Windows Server 2008 Core Server . Definitely over thick line those comments are realistic however I always had this in mind that there must be something behind this concept of core server. Microsoft will not brand something without any real cause.

The biggest advantage I see about Core Server is the scenarios in which we can install core server.

Here is one I have in my mind.

Scenario :

I am Admin in XYZ company and they have a branch office at a distant location. As company doesn't want to invest a lot on IT infrastructure for remote office  and expects to me to manage the servers for that location. They want me ...<< MORE >>

Real Life Deployment of Outlook using PRF files

The Outlook profile file (PRF file) allows you to create MAPI profiles for Outlook users. The PRF file is a text file with syntax that Outlook uses to generate a profile. Using a PRF file, you can create new profiles for users or modify existing profiles.

I had an assignment which required me to write a script that calls a PRF file. The PRF file creates a new Outlook profile for each of the users.  The script will run in the logon services so it needs some basic logic to ensure that it is executed only once.

Here are a couple of samples that we have got ( they may need modification to suit your enviornment)

Recovering Deleted Emails

Most of the times if we have deleted any email from outlook ( Specifically hard deleted), we are forced to believe that it cannot be recovered without restoring from backup, which is not completely true.

We can recover any email deleted/ Archived from the Mailbox if it has not passed the deleted item retention period ( which is by default 7 days)

A few tips that I follow

1.       Any Item deleted from the Mailbox either a soft delete or hard delete goes in the dumpster which can be recovered unless the online maintenance has not cleared those emails ( in default case if the mails were deleted on 31st  Oct. they will not be actually gone from the database till 7th Nov)

Moving SharePoint Databases to a New Drive

This has been fairly common scenario & simple too, however i just thought to put up all the options that we have for this & some considerations about them. Here it goes

Option 1: New Storage Drive in Addition to Existing Drive

1.      Stop all SharePoint related IIS web sites

2.      The following Services had set to Stopped

  •       Windows SharePoint Services Administration

  •       Windows SharePoint Services Timer

  •       Windows SharePoint Services ...<< MORE >>

GFI Mail Archiver - 1

How many times we have used the restore option to get that one mail or those precious emails that got deleted and now only resides in one those many back tapes back in the store rooms. Yes we are talking about Exchange Server and the problems of its Administrators. Recovery Storage Group is good, but there are better options available.

I remember working with Mimosa NearPoint which manipulates the Message store to get its content from Exchange Server to SQL and then stores the actual content in a file with pointer to SQL database. A wonderful product no doubt. What about using the Exchange Servers own archiving method, and making things more easy. A web client and a query to SQL server with description and lo you see your message in the web client and then choose what to do with that ... sounds good. That’s what GFI MailArchiver does.

GFI MailArchiver is an archiving solution for SMBs. Reasonably Priced, the software archives all corporate email, reduces dependency on troublesome PST files, permits employees to access old and deleted emails at any time and from any location and helps companies meet eDiscovery and legal compliance requirements.”

GFI MailArchiver uses Exchange Servers Journaling feature, so you have to enable journaling on  your server.

How to Enable Message Journaling:

GFI MailArchiver 6 now allows end-users to search and access all their old and deleted emails from a folder in their Outlook email client. Integration with Outlook means that archived email can be assessed from Outlook as if it were their Exchange mailbox or local PST file. GFI MailArchiver users can now enjoy a faster and improved experience than those using stubs.

No Stubs : This is very good feature many archiving solutions leave a small stub file in place of the archived message that can be used by end-users to retrieve archived messages from the archival system however this creates problems for administrators in terms of server performance as small portions of the emails are still left into the Exchange Server store. I think this is because using journaling rather than manipulating the message store as mentioned earlier.

System Requirement:

1.Windows 2000 (SP 3 above) or Windows 2003. The box need to be in DC or part of the domain as it utilizes Active Directory.

2. Exchange Server 2000 and above

3.MS .NET Framework 2.0

4.IIS - WWW service ASP .net needs to be registered with IIS.
How? : Please follow the procedure below to register ASP.NET:

   1. Open Command Prompt.
   2. Change directory as follows:
          * For 32-bit machines change to:
            <WindowsDir>\Microsoft.NET\Framework\<version number>\
          * For 64-bit machines change to:
            <WindowsDir\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\<version number>\
   3. Run the command ‘aspnet_regiis.exe -i’ and press enter.

One more advantage with GFI over other Archiving Solutions, you can use SQL Server only if you can afford or use the free open source FireBird. That’s saving !,  check out more details at their official site : FireBird

dragover="true" class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"> The installation went very smooth by following the user manual. The user manual is very good I must say and if followed sincerely you should not have any issue.

Looks good so far.. I will update more on this as I go explore in the coming week. Catch ya later.

Blackberry Vs ActiveSync - The WAR is ON !!!!

                                                                THE WAR IS ON!!!!

It’s been quite many years since Blackberry Technology has rule the world with its impeccable, secure and fast messaging technology on mobile devices. Now the industry has changed, with the introduction Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 it seems to me that monopoly of blackberry is over. I have seen several projects where Clients are moving from Blackberry to Windows Mobile services. The BIG question WHY? Simple cost and TCO. Below I am going to discuss the same where I will point out the comparison between both of them.
