Installation of System Center Configuration Manager 2007
Installation of System Center Configuration Manager 2007
In my previous article I was discussing about basic overview of SCCM. If you haven’t read that one please click on this.
From this article onwards we will see how to install System Center Configuration Manager and configurations of it.
My Scope for this SCCM is : How to install primary site server & secondary site server, Creating Boundary & Discovery of Client Machine based on the Active Directory site , Hardware\Software inventory and finally promoting primary site server as central site server.
My current Topology:
I have one domain called as EUROPE.com. This Europe.com is consist of two different sites, one is called as Europe.com which is under Default-First-Site Name and another one is called as Site2.Europe.com under Site2.
Figure1:
- If you take a close look in the above figure I have two different sites: Default-First-Site Name and site2. Site1(Europe.com) is having the subnet range of 192.168.1.0/24 and site2 (site2.Europe.com) is having subnet range of 192.168.0.0/24 .
- Both the sites has one server each as a DC\GC and both of them are DNS server as well.
Note: Before you go for installing the SCCM application make sure that DNS & AD is functioning properly.
My infrastructure topology:
Europe.com:
Under Defualt-First-Site-Name (Europe.com)
o Site1DC : DC\GC & DNS server (installed)
o Primary : This primary site server will report to my centralized server (installed only os, IIS & SQL)
o Central : This is going to be my centralized server (yet to install)
o Site1XP : Client Machine (yet to install)
Under Site2 : (site2.Europe.com)
o Site2DC : DC\GC & DNS Server (installed)
o Secondary : This will report to my Primary Site Server (yet to install)
o Site2Vista : Client Machine (yet to install)
As I told you earlier, before you perform installation of SCCM we need to meet the prerequisite on the server level. Some of the prerequisites as follows –
Ø User account which we are going to use for installing this SCCM should be part of the schema admin (I recommend this just because we need to extend the schema)
Ø Computer Account & Administrator of both the sites should have full control on system folder.
Ø Install IIS, Enable the BITS.
Ø Install SQL 2005 & SP2 for SQL 2005 database
Ø Install WSUS 3.0
Ø Need to have hotfix for .Netframework 2.0
1) User Account – I am using Enterprise and Schema Admins rights user – Administrator (as my best practice)
2) Delegates Controls - I need to delegate the rights for this server in both the domain (Europe.com and site2.europe.com and local admin rights as well for the administrator of the both domain in Primary Site Server.
Note: Delegating permission may be different what I am doing here, because I am going to give full control which might be or might not recommended, depending upon the scenario.
Ø Login to Site1DC.Europe.com server
Ø Open Active Directory Users and Computers (select Advance Feature)
Ø Right Click Europe.com and click on Delegate Control
Ø Select the computer in which you want to install SCCM (my server name : Primary)
Ø Select Create a custom task to delegate and click on next
Ø Select “this folder, existing object in this folder, and creation of new objects in this folder” and click on next
Ø Then select General, Property-Specific & creation/deletion of specific child object” and then select full control, then click on next and finish.
Note: You can only give delegation rights to SYSTEM OU in the Active Directory Users and Computers because that is the place where it will store the SCCM information.
Ø Delegate full control to Administrator as well in Europe.com and site2.Europe com by following the above steps.
Ø Then give full control for Primary Server following the above steps in Site2.Europe.com DC.
Now give the local admin rights to Europe\Administrator and Site2\Administrator in the Primary Server:
Ø Log on to Primary Server
Ø Right click my computer and click on Manage
Ø Expand Local users and groups
Ø Click on Groups
Ø Double click Administrator Groups
Ø Click on Add and add the Domain Administrator
Figure 2:
3) Install IIS & Enable the BITS:
Inorder to enable :
Ø Log on to Primary Server
Ø Start => Control Panel => Add\Remove Windows Components => Application Servers => IIS => select “Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) Server extensions”
Confirm that BITS, Webdav, Server Side includes, Internet Data Connector is set to allowed.
Ø Log on to Primary Site Server
Ø Start => Programs => Administrative tools => IIS => Web Service Extension
Figure 3:
4) Install SQL 2005 and SP2 (already I have installed)
5) Install WSUS 3.0 (already I have installed) : For download WSUS 3.0 click here
6) Install hotfix for .netframework 2.0 : click here
We met the above prerequisite which means we are ready to install toSCCM 2007. The very first thing we need to do is extending the schema
Extending the Schema: Upgrading the schema is not a mandatory which you suppose to do but it is recommended to do it before you move further.
Now we will extend the schema, inorder to do this:
Ø Log on to Site1DC Server.
Ø Insert the SCCM 2007 Disk into CD drive
Ø Click on Start => Run => locate this file D:\SMSSETUP\BIN\I386\EXTADSCH.EXE and hit OK
Figure 4:
Ø When you are running EXTADSCH.exe it will create a ExtADSCH.log in C root drive and under that logs it should show you this message “Successfully extended the Active Directory schema.”
Now we will confirm that whether we have met the prerequisite and then we will install SCCM 2007:
Checking the prerequisite status:
Ø Log on to Primary Server
Ø Run the SCCM 2007 soft copy
Ø It will display the below screen
Figure 5:
Ø As per the above diagram select “Run the prerequisite checker”
Ø It will ask for SQL Database servername and instance name
Figure 6:
Once you click on OK it will show you the prerequisite which needs to be full filled but as we met our prerequisite – it will show us successful
Figure7:
We met our prerequisite, now it’s a time to install SCCM 2007.
Installation of SCCM 2007:
Click on Configuration Manager 2007 under Install
Figure 8:
Once you click on “configuration manager 2007: it will pop-up with welcome message showing the prerequisite requirement just click on NEXT

Next screen will “Customer Experience Improvement” ideally I select No option because it is my lab server.
Then it will ask you for your product key: Give the product key number
Then it will ask for the location of folder where it wants to create and configure the SCCM file. By default it will choose the location of C drive,
Figure 13:
Now the next screen will be Site Setting, Site setting is nothing but what will be your code for this Server and friendly name to be recognized in the SCCM console. Code should be consist of only 3 characters, I have given the code for this server as PRI and friendly name as Primary Site Server for Europe Region
Figure 14:
Next is the Site Mode: Site mode consist of two options Native or Mixed Mode. Mixed mode is supported for SMS 2003 and Native Mode which is going to more secured like having one certificate for this SCCM 2007. We will choose the default one - Mixed Mode.
Figure 15:
Now the next screen is Client Agent Selection which we need
Figure 16:
Note : The above options are selected by default except NAP (NAP can be used if you have windows 2008 and for allowing or disallowing any computers which is not meeting the rules or criteria )
Then it will display the database server name
Figure 17:
SMS Provider Setting:
Figure 18:
It will ask you whether we need Management point or not, by default it will be selected “install” option
Figure 19:
Then port setting: as I don’t have any certificate so I selected the default one - Port 80
Figure 20:
Now the next screen is updated prerequisite component: In this place you need to have your computer i.e Primary site server to be online in the internet and select “Check for updates and download newer version” This will download the 88 updates into your local drive
Figure 21:
I have already downloaded so I will select the second option: “The latest updates have already been downloaded to an alternate path”
Path of my updates: C:\Downlaods
Figure 22:
Now it will show you the summary of the configuration which we had set
Figure 23:
After this, setup will evaluate the setting in our system then it will check for prerequisite and then click on begin install:
Figure 24:
Then it will begin to install:
Figure 25:
Tips: When we are doing installation, we don’t know how is the setup progress going apart from this GUI, we can see ConfigMgrSetup.log, This log file is stored in the C root drive which you can see and this will help us for troubleshooting step.
After the completion of setup it will look like this:
Figure 26:
Then click on Next as per the figure 28 and click Finish.
Now when you right click on My computer => Manage => Local Users and Group => Group : you will see three more groups – SMS Admin, SMS_sitesystemtoSiteServer and SitetoSiteConnection
Figure 27:
Under Active Directory Users and computer you will see the primary site server information:
Figure 28:
I hope that this article is being helpful for you to understand the process of installation of SCCM 2007 keeping in my which are the permission we need and what are the prerequisites.
