How to and FAQ on MRM for Exchange 2007

Q: How do I migrate or import/export mailbox manager policies in Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007.

Ans: You cannot move, migrate or do an import/export using any third-party utilities. The only way is to create MRM policies from the scratch on Exchange 2007 server.

Q: What service is responsible for running MRM on Exchange 2007

Ans: Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Assistants service is responsible for running MRM policies in Exchange 2007. This service depends on Microsoft Exchange Active Directory Topology service.

Q: When MRM policy is run against any mailbox and the policy says the items which fall in the retention period go to Deleted Items folder, it creates sub-folders under the Deleted Items folder for all Outlook clients with respective folder type like Drafts for Drafts folder, Inbox for Inbox folder etc. How to get rid of this behavior and place all the items under the Deleted Items folder directly and not having any sub-folders getting created.

Ans: This is a default behavior and cannot be changed. It is the same no matter what Outlook version you are using.

Q: How can we configure Exchange 2007 to send notification emails with output to Administrator or users when the MRM policies are run?

Ans: In Exchange 2003, we had the option of sending notification emails. This is not there anymore in Exchange 2007 and the updates so far. However, we can turn on logging to view the results of the MRM policies like the below example:

 Set-MailboxServer -Identity ExchangeServer1 -LogDirectorySizeLimitForManagedFolders "1 GB"
