Promoting Primary Site Server to Central Site Server

Promoting Primary Site Server to Central Site Server

Brief Overview:
Before proceeding with this article I would appreciate if you go through the below link
 Basic Overview of SCCM
 Installation of SCCM
 Installation of Secondary Site Server
 Creating Boundaries and Discovery Clients based on the Active Directory System Discovery
 Performing Hardware & software inventory

Current Topology:
I have two sites: Europe.com (192.168.1.x) and Site2.Europe.com (192.168.0.x)
Under Europe.com:
1) Site1DC : DC\GC\DNS for 192.168.1.x
2) Primary : Primary Site Server
3) Windows XP : Client for SCCM 2007
4) Central Server : Yet to Install
Under Site2.Europe.com
1) Site2DC :  DC\GC\DNS for 192.168.0.x
2) Secondary : Secondary Site Server
3) WindowsVista : Client for SCCM 2007

Goal: I need to bring one more SCCM server which will call as Central. This Central Server will have the ability of Central Site function i.e in other word my Primary Site Server will report to my Central Site Server.

Installation of Central Site Server:
Installation of Central Site Server is not a big deal for us. The installation part will be normal as like the installation the Primary Site Server. Once we install it after then only we need to configure the central site server.
For installation I am not going take walkthrough because it will be exactly the same step as like we did on installation of SCCM 2007.
The only thing we need to concentrate is site code and site server description. And for this Central Site Server, I decided to keep the code as : CEN and Site Name “Central Site Server for Europe Region”

Prerequisites:
 Install IIS & Enable BITS and Allow Webdav
 .Netframework 2.0
 Installing hotfix for .netframework2.0 : KB932303
 SQL 2005 with SP2
 Delegating the permission (Simply give this server as Full Control under System folder – Active Directory Users & Computers in both the domain)
 Installation of WSUS 3.0
 Installation of SCCM 2007
For more information on how to go with installation please refer this link.

Configuring Central Site Server:
Central Site Server is nothing but a server which will receive a update from the child object which can be a primary server or secondary server. So there should be a connection between the Central and Primary Server, this access will happen only if they both have proper permission within themselves so we need to delegate some permission for both the computers.

After the installation we need to assign rights to this Central Server on Primary Server and vice versa, inorder to do it:
 Log on to Central Server
 Right click my computer => Manage => Local Users & Group
 Under Administrator Group add the Primary Server computer, in my case computer name is Primary Server.
 Under Local Users & Group – Double click SMS_SiteToSiteConnection_SiteCode and Add Primary Server name
Figure 1:

Now log on to Primary server and follow the above step
 Right click my computer => Manage => Local Users & Group
 Under Administrator Group add the Central Server computer, in my case computer name is Central Server.
 Under Local Users & Group – Double click SMS_SiteToSiteConnection_SiteCode and Add Central Server name
After this let’s come back to our central server and open the configuration manager console because we need to add the address of primary server and need to make this server as a central server for all SCCM servers

Adding the Address of Primary Server:
 Log on to Central Server
 Open the Configuration Manager Console
 Expand the site Database
 Expand the site Management
 Expand the Site Server
 Expand the site Setting
 Right Click Addresses => New => Standard Sender Address
It will open the new windows which will request us to give the destination code and destination server name, for my lab : Destination code : PRI and Destination Server name : Primary
Figure 2

Once you click on Next you will get schedule screen by default it will prompt for all time then simply on next and finish
Figure3:

Follow the above step on the Primary server i.e create a Address for Central Server.
Destination code: CEN and Destination Server Name :Central

Now Log on back to Central Server
 Open the SCCM Console
 Expand Site Database
 Expand Site Management
 Right click Site Server (CEN-Central Server for Europe Region) then go to properties and select “set as parent site”
Figure 4:

And then select Central Site
Figure 4-1

Now Log on back to Primary Site Server
 Open the SCCM Console
 Expand Site Database
 Expand Site Management
 Right click Site Server (PRI-Primary Server for Europe Region) then go to properties and select “set as parent site”
 Then select Report to Parent Site and select the Central Server Code
Figure 5:

Once it complete the task, Under Primary Server => SCCM Console
 Expand Site Database
 Expand Computer Management
 Expand Collection
You will see small lock on the each and every components on collections, which means you can’t able to modify any information under Collection, if you want to modify or install then you need to go to Central Server SCCM Console
Figure 6:

Under Central Server, when you open the console, you will see the primary server information updated in the hierarchy object
